College Readiness

What does it mean to be college ready upon graduating from the Knox County Public Schools?

First, as a student, it means that you have successfully demonstrated mastery of skills and concepts taught throughout your K-12 education.  This is measured by benchmarks on the ACT, Compass, or KYOTE assessment.

Most importantly, as a rising college student, college readiness means that you have reached the level of preparation a first-time college student needs in order to succeed in a credit-bearing course at a postsecondary institution. Success, in this instance, is defined as completing entry-level courses at a level of understanding and proficiency that prepares the student for subsequent courses

College readiness benchmarks

Ultimately, we would like for all students to meet the benchmarks on the ACT which are Reading (20), English (18) and Mathematics (19).   It is sometimes necessary for a student to take the Compass or KYOTE assessment to demonstrate mastery.  (Note: the Compass exam is no longer a measure of college readiness beginning with the 2016-2017 academic year.) Benchmarks on those assessments are English (74), Reading (85), and Mathematics (36) on the Compass or Writing (6), Reading (20),  College Ready Math (22), and College Algebra (14) on the KYOTE.

When a student successfully demonstrates that he/she is college ready, and combines their benchmark scores with passing scores on a technical assessment from career readiness (KOSSA or Industry Certification), that student becomes college and career ready.

Why is college and career readiness important?

Over the past three decades, the number of jobs in the U.S. economy that require postsecondary education or training has surged. More than 63% of jobs in 2018 will require some postsecondary education/training.
For Knox County students to compete in a global economy, our workforce must be educated and have the skills employers demand. A more educated workforce means better jobs paying higher wages, lower unemployment and a higher standard of living for our next generation.
